If you're looking for a one-tonne 4x4 pick-up, your decision has gotten quite a bit harder in recent times. New models from several different brands have been sprouting out like weeds, and manufacturers are marketing them more like glamorous lifestyle vehicles than just workmans tools.

Recent successes with the Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail means that the Navara pick-up is said to be a combination of these two knowledge bases: a tough, off-roading, working truck with the refined road manners of a crossover.

The new Navara needs to be good; the Mitusbishi L200, Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger are thorns in its side and we'll soon see the Fiat Fullback joining the fray. Nissan is also sharing the Navara's platform with the Renault Alaskan and even Mercedes-Benz is poised to sell a pick-up in the UK that will have tech from Nissan, too. The options are growing rapidly.

Luckily the Leaf has changed with the times, and it’s still a bit ahead of its newer rivals in terms of range, that all-important measure of an EV’s real-world usability. For 2016, the Leaf’s uplevel SV and SL trim levels now come standard with a higher-capacity, 30.0-kWh battery pack that replaces the previous 24.0-kWh battery, which is still offered on the base Leaf S. The new, larger battery affords an EPA-rated range of 107 miles, a useful improvement over the 24-kWh Leaf’s 84 miles.

All-new or updated electric cars are imminent from Ford , General Motors , BMW , Hyundai , and Volkswagen , all of which promise to deliver 100 miles of range or better. But as of this writing, the Leaf is the only non-Tesla EV that tops the century mark. The Kia Soul EV is next-best, at 93 miles of rated range, while others such as the Volkswagen e-Golf and Ford Focus Electric —in their current forms, at least—are rated at only 83 miles and 76 miles, respectively, on a full charge.

The Leaf’s new battery lived up to its promise in our experience. In mixed driving, including some battery-sapping highway stints, we measured a maximum driving range of 100 miles. Introduce more variables, like a highway-intensive commute or more extreme temperatures, and that number would decrease, predictably. But if it’s to be driven exclusively around town at lower speeds, it doesn’t seem far-fetched to see the Leaf match, or even beat, the EPA-rated 107-mile figure.

Nissan wants no part of that for its fifth-generation Altima —even if the sales surge of its own Murano , Pathfinder , and Rogue crossover SUVs is contributing to the sedan slide. The Altima is still the bestselling product in Nissan’s lineup, and so far this year, it’s just ahead of the Honda Accord for second-place sales honors in that segment ( the Toyota Camry remains number one).

The fifth-gen Altima was all-new in 2013 , so this update leaves the sedan’s bones largely untouched. The big change is the move to “Energetic Flow” styling, which consists of a more muscular front fascia, Nissan’s “V-motion” grille (which looks like a grille overhanging another grille), and boomerang-shaped headlights and taillights.

The likely theory being that if crossovers are selling like hotcakes, then adding some Murano visuals to the Altima should spur sales of the sedan. It doesn’t stop there: Energetic Flow design is now found on the newly excited surfaces of the smaller and soberer Sentra and on the more expressive and expansive Maxima .
